Butterfly Wings

Whew!! What a weekend!! We were super busy and it just flew by! We spent Saturday up north celebrating Easter early with my family, then on Sunday we headed down south to celebrate the 3rd birthday of one of our dear friend’s daughter.
Today I wanted to share the gift Brynlee and I made for her, I really think it is the perfect, whimsical gift that any little girl would love!

I purchased the Wife-Made butterfly wing pattern back in October when I made Brynlee’s Rainbow Dash costume and have wanted to make the butterfly wings ever since. And a gift for a 3rd birthday party was the perfect time to try them out! I found the super colorful fabric at Joann’s and decided to just use solids for the wing’s appliqué since the main fabric is so busy.

I also used silver glitter elastic to make the wings even more whimsical. Brynlee loved them so much that I will be making a second pair very soon, she’s been begging for some ever since I had her try these on to make sure they would fit well.

I also decided to make a flower crown to go with the wings so the birthday girl could be a butterfly princess. I got Brynlee involved by letting her help me choose the flowers and their placement and to help me add the jewels. I also found a blue butterfly to add to the crown since the birthday girl’s favorite colors are pink and blue.

And to finish off the gift, Brynlee and I made a magical wand to match the wings. Brynlee thought it was so fun to pick out the beads and help string them on the ribbons.

I love giving handmade gifts and I especially love when I can get Brynlee involved in helping me. She’s been asking me to teach her to sew lately, I already have her step on the pedal for me when I sew, but I’m not sure what age is appropriate to actually let her use my machine. I also don’t know if I have the patience for it yet, but I do really want her to learn. I wish I would have been taught when I was young and I’m so excited that she wants to learn too! I love sharing my hobbies with her.

So, if any of you have any recommendations on teaching a child to sew and what is a good age to start them, please let me know in the comments.

Happy Sewing!!
